How do you answer Calvinists when they take you by surprise and accuse you of works salvation?

And....

How do we work out holy living practically, day-to-day?

Ask them, "Are we supposed to purposely sin everyday or behave in a way that respects and honors God's laws?"

Then ask them, “Wouldn’t you agree that God would desire that we do the latter?”

Therefore my “Works” are not a precursor to faith but a natural response to my salvation experience; it is a natural demonstration of my Love for God, as my faithfulness to my wife is a natural demonstration of my love to her.”

The phrase "works salvation" is unhelpful because of its gross ambiguity. According to Scripture, you better have works of love and obedience that flow forth from saving faith, else your faith is dead and salvation is a failure. Christian salvation involves works, like it or not.

What the Bible condemns is justification by works of the law. We are not made right with God, nor do we stay right with God through the merit of works. Faith is the condition of being in right relationship to God, and gifts of grace pour in and through our lives. It is God at work in us in a gracious way as we simply receive and respond to Him.

The best way to work out holy living is to live in the grace of God - that is, under the power and teaching of the Holy Spirit. Casting aside dead works of willful sin and regenerated by the Spirit be free from sin's power and dominion, we now learn little by little what it means to be Christlike in various outworkings of our lives until our heart is entirely pure with God's holy love.

John 14:15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments."
John 14:21 "They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me"
John 14:23 "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them.."
John 14:24 "Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.."
John 15:10 "If you keep my commandments you will abide in my love.."

All Christians would answer "yes" to the question "do you love Jesus", but what percentage would answer "yes" to the question "do you keep His commandments"?
