Luk 8:43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years,[fn4] but no one could heal her.

Luk 8:44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

Luk 8:45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

Luk 8:46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

Luk 8:47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.

Luk 8:48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

This account is pretty amazing. Jesus feels the power go out of him but it seems to read as if he didn't know how or where until the lady confesses. Should we take this account at face value and believe that people can 'take' from Jesus without him knowing?

It speaks to the intrinsic power of faith when it is centered on the right Object. God has set the mechanism of faith in play, and has not limited its effect when it is directed towards him in a pure simple and clear manner. Interesting to be sure.

In his Incarnation, prior to His return to the right hand of the Father, Jesus was neither omniscient, omnipresent, nor omnipotent. He voluntarily surrendered those divine attributes in order to become human. (Phil. 2)

In another place in the Gospels, Jesus says that he doesn't know the date of his return to earth, and that only the Father knows.

It does seem clear that the power that went forth from Him was none other than the effectual miracle-working power of the Holy Spirit, and that certainly the Father and the Holy Spirit (who does the Father's bidding) knew what they were doing when they sent the power out from Jesus into the woman who touched Him.

Great story. A favorite illustration for the power and potential of faith.

That is such a good observation.

That is a good explanation as to why Jesus seemed not to know what had happened.
It's funny though because at other times he demonstrated that he could read the thoughts of people.

The best explanation I know of for these instances in the Gospels is that Jesus, as an anointed human being (though also truly divine in a self-limited way) was only supernaturally endowed to know the thoughts of others by virtue of the voice of the Holy Spirit within, and in certain circumstances it might not have been important for Jesus to have access to such knowledge. It also seems obvious that Jesus was a good judge of character and that he knew what was in people's hearts not only by means of the Holy Spirit, but also by His own experience with people.

I wonder what that power felt like when it went out from him. Of course that would be a dumb question because I doubt anyone else knows either. Smile
