The Gift of the Gods

In this book one will be able to see the extra-biblical origins of the doctrine called "Eternal Security" by tracing its late intrusion into Christianity through the historical study of theological development. One will also be shown the irrefutable connections of this doctrine to the pagan philosophy in which it came. An excellent and witty book! One of the most repeated quotes on the www.eternalsecurity.us site is, "There never was or ever can be" a born Securist. "You reader, or any other truly born again Christian, cannot read Eternal Security verses and get Eternal Security "out of " them. The only way that Eternal Security can be attached to these verses is to "read it into" them. This proves that Eternal Security is an extra-Biblical, external philosophy, seeking Biblical sanction. People are "educated into" Eternal Security, just as truly as atheists are "educated into" atheism", which comes from this little known book by Dr. Henry Shilling. It was a ground-breaking book in its day, and has never been refuted or superseded. Dr. Shilling pieced together the details of what is sometimes noted by other writers on the issue of historical theology and its development, but is rarely pursued with any vigor. Schilling also delves into the philosophically anchored driver behind this doctrine, which is something that those that do not swerve outside the realm of Biblical Theology may not realize is presently influencing many modern theological outcomes. I commend Dennis Hartman at IMARC.CC for his efforts in bringing this rare and long out of print gem to our generation.

Elements of Divinity
By Dr. Thomas Ralston. This link contains only the chapters that contrast Calvinism to that of Scriptural Arminianism. A lively and straightforward contrast for his generation (cir. 1920's) and ours!

Compendium of Methodism

James Porter was an American Methodist (cir. 1850). During his ministry and earthly labors he wrote sixteen different books including Compendium of Methodism. He was deeply involved in evangelism and theological education. This "Compendium" gives us a brief but accurate overview of Methodism as a whole, when it was still a conservative and mighty Movement. You will enjoy the friendly style of this author!

The Handbook of Christian Theology
This is the introduction to Benjamin Field's Theology.

The Handbook of Christian Theology
Written by Benjamin Fields. This was intended to be a handbook for preachers who used to travel a circuit; a veritable ready-reference of Methodist Theology. While it is written in a catechismal form of question and answer, which is usually thought of as more of a layman's style of writing, it is consistently the one most likely resources to answer the tough questions that the more technical theologians seem to evade or pass over. It is without a doubt one of the top ten books I would replace if I were to lose my reference library.

Binney's Theological Compend
Originally written by Rev. Amos Binney, and ably revised by his son-in-law, Dr. Daniel Steele. Quick, concise, and firmly Biblical! This is a small theology that gives a good overview of Biblical Methodism. It is easy to read, and contains a lot of great theological information, but will not quote the passages, but only give the references for you to look up in your own Bible. This reduces the size of this work down to less than half of the size it would have been. Great quick reference! A perfect balance between brevity and depth!

Theological Compend
This was the first Systematic Theology that was written from the Nazarene perspective. As Church doctrine changes through the years, one can see where this concise and fast moving theology records the Biblical foundation that established the Church of the Nazarene. This was written by Edgar P. Ellyson in 1908 before the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene changed its name to the Church of the Nazarene. In the same style a Binney's Theological Compend.
